Classical Arabic, or Fusha, is the language in which the Quran was revealed and in which centuries of Islamic scholarship were written. Learning it lets you approach these sources directly, without depending entirely on translation.

This course builds your reading, vocabulary and grammar together, always with the aim of understanding authentic texts.

What You Will Learn

  • Core Quranic vocabulary and frequent word roots
  • Sentence structure and essential grammar
  • Reading vowelled, then unvowelled, texts
  • Understanding selected verses and hadith in Arabic
  • Using a root-based Arabic dictionary
  • Translating short passages accurately

Who Is This Course For?

The course is for adults and older teenagers who want to understand the Quran and Islamic texts. It welcomes beginners who can read the script as well as students with some earlier study.

How the Classes Work

You follow a graded syllabus with your tutor. Lessons combine a short text, the vocabulary and grammar it contains, and exercises to fix them in memory. Regular reviews make sure earlier material is not lost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Fusha and Modern Standard Arabic?
They share the same grammar. Classical Arabic focuses on the vocabulary and style of the Quran and early texts, while Modern Standard Arabic is used in today’s media and writing.

Will I understand the Quran after this course?
You will recognise a large share of its vocabulary and structures. Full understanding grows with continued study.

Do I need to read Arabic already?
You should know the alphabet. If not, we can begin with a short reading course.
