Learn Quran online with Surah Al-Fatiha

Surah Al-Fatiha is the first chapter of the Quran and consists of seven verses (ayahs). According to Al-Suyuti, as mentioned in his book The Perfect Guide to the Sciences of the Quran: Al-Itqan Fi ‘Ulum Al-Qur’an, it has more than 20 names. Some of these names include Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book), Sab’a min al-Mathani (Seven Repeated Ones, as mentioned in the Quran), Al-Hamd, Ash-Shifa’ (The Cure), and Al-Kafiya.

Why is it Named with These Names Specifically?

  • Al-Fatiha

It is named Al-Fatiha because it opens the Quran.

  • Umm al-Kitab

It is called the Mother of the Book because it encompasses all the objectives of the religion.

  • Al-Hamd

It is named the Praise because it begins with the praise of Allah (SWT).

  • As-Sab’ al-Mathani

It is called the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses because Allah (SWT) named it as such in Surah Al-Hijr, where He said:

“وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ”

“And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an.” (Quran 15:87)

The term Al-Mathani refers to the fact that it is repeated and recited in every rak’ah (unit of prayer). It is also said that in this surah, Allah is praised in the manner He has commanded.

  • Al-Kafiyah

It is called the Sufficient because it suffices in prayer in place of other surahs, while no other surah suffices in its place.

The Benefits in Surah Al-Fatiha

Surah Al-Fatiha begins with praise for Allah, who gives and bestows upon His servants even before they ask Him, thus deserving their praise. He reminds them of this so they may increase in gratitude. The Surah highlights the two most important acts of the heart:

In addition, the Surah mentioned the importance of righteous companionship and good role models in the verse:

Surah Al-Ikhlas

Surah Al-Ikhlas is a Meccan Surah, meaning it was revealed in Mecca. It consists of four verses and is the 112th Surah in the Quran. It is called Al-Ikhlas (the Sincerity) because it embodies the purity of Tawhid (monotheism), as its main focus is the oneness of Allah. Surah Al-Ikhlas also called Al-Asas (the Foundation) because it encompasses the concept of Allah’s oneness, which is the foundation of Islam. Additionally, it is referred to as Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad because the Surah begins with this verse.

The Benefits of Surah Al-Ikhlas

Surah Al-Ikhlas has numerous benefits:

  1. It is equivalent to one-third of the Quran.

As in Sahih al-Bukhari: The prophet asked “ Is any one of you unable to recite one-third of the Qur’ān in one night? They said: How could anyone read one-third of the Qur’ān (in one night)? He said: Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad (Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ) is equivalent to one-third of the Qur’ān. “

      2. It contains a description of the Most Merciful, and whoever loves it, Allah loves them.

As mentioned in Sahih Muslim: “ Ā’isha said that the Prophet sent a man in charge of an expedition and he would recite for his companions during their prayer, finishing with “Say, He is God, One.” When they returned they mentioned that to the Prophet, and he told them to ask him why he did that. They asked him and he replied, “Because it is a description of the Compassionate One, and I like to recite it.” Then the Prophet said, “Tell him that God loves him “

      3. It is sufficient. In Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, it is mentioned:

Abdullah Ibn Khubaib said: “ We went out one rainy and intensely dark night to look for God’s messenger, and when we caught up on him he said to me, “Say.” I asked him what I was to say, and he replied, “If you recite ‘Say, He is God, One’ and al-Mu’awidhatān (The last 3 sūras of the Qur’ān) three times morning and evening, they will serve you for every purpose.”

      4. It earns great rewards in Paradise. Ad-Darimi reported that:

Saeed Ibn al-Musayyib reported in mursal form that the Prophet said, “If anyone recites ten times ‘Say, He is God, One’, a palace will be built for him in paradise because of it ” .

How Can We Implement These Benefits in Our Lives?

  • Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas 10 times every day.
  • Recute it along with Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas three times in the morning and evening.
