Among the many rewards Allah has promised to those who fast, one stands out with a special name: the gate of Ar-Rayyan. It is a gate of Paradise reserved for the people of fasting. In this article we explain what the gate of Ar-Rayyan is, what the hadith says about it, what its name means, and how you can strive to be among those called through it.

The Hadith About the Gate of Ar-Rayyan
The Prophet ﷺ said: “In Paradise there is a gate called Ar-Rayyan, through which those who fast will enter on the Day of Resurrection, and none except them will enter through it. It will be said: ‘Where are those who fasted?’ They will stand up, and none except them will enter through it. After they have entered, it will be closed and no one else will enter through it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)
This hadith tells us three important things about the gate of Ar-Rayyan: it belongs only to those who fast, they will be called by name as a group, and once they have entered, it will be closed.
What Does “Ar-Rayyan” Mean?
Scholars explain that the word Ar-Rayyan comes from the Arabic root r-w-y, which relates to having one’s thirst fully quenched. The fasting person spends long hours thirsty for the sake of Allah, so it is fitting that their reward is a gate whose very name speaks of being satisfied and refreshed. The name of the gate of Ar-Rayyan is itself a reminder that no sacrifice for Allah is ever lost.
Why Is Fasting Rewarded So Specially?
Fasting is a hidden act of worship. Only Allah truly knows whether a person is fasting sincerely. In a hadith qudsi, Allah says: “Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for Me and I shall reward it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari). The gate of Ar-Rayyan reflects this special status: a private act of devotion receives a public honour on the Day of Judgement.
Can a Person Be Called From More Than One Gate?
In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ described how people will be called from different gates of Paradise according to their best deeds: the people of prayer from the gate of prayer, the people of jihad from the gate of jihad, the people of fasting from the gate of Ar-Rayyan, and the people of charity from the gate of charity. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked whether anyone would be called from all of them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Yes, and I hope that you will be one of them.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This shows that while the gate of Ar-Rayyan is for those known for fasting, a believer can strive to excel in many good deeds.
How to Strive for the Gate of Ar-Rayyan
The foundation is fasting the month of Ramadan with faith and sincerity. Beyond that, the Sunnah offers many voluntary fasts that help a Muslim become one of “the people of fasting”:
- Mondays and Thursdays, which the Prophet ﷺ used to fast regularly.
- The three “white days” (the 13th, 14th and 15th) of each lunar month.
- Six days of Shawwal after Ramadan.
- The day of Arafah for those not performing Hajj.
- The day of Ashura, with a day before or after it.
Start small. One voluntary fast a week, done consistently, is better than many fasts followed by long breaks.
Protecting the Reward of Your Fast
A fast is not only about food and drink. The Prophet ﷺ warned that whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of his leaving food and drink (Sahih al-Bukhari). To be among those called to the gate of Ar-Rayyan, guard your tongue, your eyes and your character while fasting.
Fasting and the Quran
Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, and fasting and the Quran are closely linked. Many Muslims use their fasting days to recite more, improve their Tajweed or memorize new surahs. You can listen to recitations of the verses about fasting in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183–187) on Quran.com.

Children love to hear that Paradise has a special gate for people who fast. Telling them about the gate of Ar-Rayyan can motivate them to try half-day fasts and build up gradually. Praise their effort, make their first fasts special, and explain that Allah rewards every hour of patience. Read our guide on how to teach Quran to kids for more ideas.
